That sounds academic until you remember that every button, link, and form control on your site is a target someone has to hit, often with a thumb, often in a hurry.
Bigger Is Easier
The most direct lesson is that important actions deserve to be big. A tiny button demands precision, and precision is effort, and effort is friction. Your primary call to action should be large enough that hitting it takes no thought, not a small link the visitor has to aim at carefully. Making the main action visually prominent is not just about attention, it is about making the physical act of clicking it effortless, which matters more than teams tend to assume.
Closer Is Easier
Distance matters as much as size. An action placed right where the visitor’s attention and cursor already are gets used more than the same action parked far away. This is why a call to action repeated near the content that motivates it outperforms one stranded at the bottom of the page. Put the target close to the moment of decision, not a long journey away from it.
Mobile Changes the Math
On a phone, Fitts’s Law becomes unforgiving, because the input is a blunt thumb and the screen is small. Small Targets Cause Errors, Not Just Delays
